Sometimes, the best way to overcome differences — is to embrace them.

Quinn

Nothing is more important than family. Someday I’ll have my own, if I can ever find the right guy. For now, I'm concentrating on my career and a promotion. That is until my company hires a hot-shot with the right credentials to snag the position.

I should resent him, but Tadhg Byrne is talented. And gorgeous. And though my ASL is pitiful, it means I’m the most “qualified” colleague to partner with him. Or so my boss says. So I guess I’m about to do myself out of a job.

Tadhg

After a nasty breakup with my manipulative ex, I returned home to Seattle to lick my wounds. I’m done with relationships. From now on I’m focusing on my career.

There are just a few issues with that.

1. It’s not that easy for a Deaf man to succeed in a Hearing world, even with the right degree and experience.

2. Quinn MacDougall—my good-natured coworker. He’s incredibly talented, driven, and distractingly handsome.

3. Quinn’s Hearing. And that’s the biggest problem of all. How can someone who isn’t Deaf ever truly understand and accept me?

Embrace Me is a low-medium angst, contemporary MM romance about language barriers, loving but demanding families, crappy bosses, and sexy guys in speedos. It contains no cheating, and a guaranteed Happily Ever After.

Content Warning:

This book contains brief mentions and short instances of gaslighting behavior, mental manipulation, mental abuse, and family abandonment by one parent.

There are explicit sexual scenes between two consenting adult men.

If any of this is distressing, please skip this novel. Your well being is important!

Tears were shed...

Embrace Me is a beautiful story of two very different men, from two different cultures (Deaf and Hearing) learning to navigate a relationship despite the challenges they faced. I loved both MCs. Quinn's desire to learn to communicate with Tadgh better was so sweet, and I cringed with him at his unintentional missteps. And Tadgh, having been through so much, was understandably reluctant to trust. The secondary characters, Quinn's group of friends and Tadgh's brother, were all distinct and enjoyable in their own ways. I was glad to see they all get their own books as well.

Listening to this book was an emotional journey. Gary Furlong's narration was excellent, and really brought Beck Grey's words to life. Each character had a distinct voice. Tadgh's sign was presented in a unique voice too, just like any other dialogue, which was cool. He does believable accents, and his female voices are decent. What Gary does exceedingly well, however, is emotion. When either MC was sad or angry, Gary made me feel it. I cried during one of Quinn's chapters just because Gary made Quinn's pain so real that his voice actually cracked (thanks for making me the crazy lady crying in her car on the interstate lol).

TL; DR-- read Embrace Me. Better yet, listen to it. The narration makes an already great story even better.

such a fantastic story

I LOVED the narration! It's my first Gary Furlong audiobook, but within the first few chapters I realised he's my favourite narrator to date.

I had no trouble differentating between the two characters (and side characters) and what I absolutely loved was how Gary managed to capture the emotional side of the texts. You could hear when a character was emotional - be it happy, overwhelmed or sad - he narrated the sound effects too. If the text stated ''he sighed in frustration'', you heard the sigh; if it said ''he replied with a twinkle in his eye'' I swear I could HEAR the twinkle.

It made the book an absolute delight to listen to and ensured that Beck Grey's wonderful writing style was 100% captured in the narration.

Now the story:
I loved Tadhg and Quinn’s workplace romance! It has all the hallmarks of a great story - friendship, passion, funny banter, learning all about the other person's likes and dislikes and who they actually are as an individual, misunderstandings and big, BIG feelings.

Both men are portrayed as whole characters - Tadhg's deafness is never used as a gimmick to further the plot along, but is simply a (VERY, VERY) important part of who Tadhg is. I loved how Quinn realised that and worked really hard to communicate with Tadhg on Tadhg's terms - both men had quite a few personal issues to work through (who amongst us don't), but I loved that they tried working on them together. And I loved it even more that, when they couldn't, they people in their lives that loved them were able to help them get over themselves and the very surmountable obstacles in their way.

Oh and I LOVED Quinn's mom!

This series is quickly becoming one of my all time favourites!

Perfect Story

I read Embrace Me when it was originally released and I adored it (see review below), and that review still stands.

Gary Furlong does an excellent job of narrating the audiobook, he really brings it to life. And I can say that both the ebook and audiobook are equally good. So whichever your preferred format, you’ll be in for an enjoyable read.

My Original Review:

Well, that had all the feelings and it was totally engrossing, I didn’t want to put it down.

This is a fantastic story that delves into the world of hearing and deaf people and communities, love, family, and dreams.

These two made me cry: because they are sweet and pretty adorable together, but also because they struggle to get it right and the pain of that struggle was raw. They both want the relationship, but they are afraid of the difficult conversations, wrapped up in their own feelings and past hurts. Wanting to give themselves to it, but worried about giving up too much of themselves in the process and not being able to give enough to the other at the same time I love how they work through it (with some familial help). And oh, the satisfaction when they do get it right. Not to mention they are hot together!

The side characters (at least the friends and family) were all great and well developed. Tom was especially great, I hope I’m always the type of friend/colleague Tom is.
I am hearing, so I can’t speak to the depiction of deaf people, their community, or what it’s like to interact with the hearing world. Obviously not every person's experience is the same, but it felt very true and real. It also made me think hard about real life and future interactions I might have with anyone who is deaf or hard of hearing.

sucked me in

I love this series. The characters are nicely developed to the point that you care what happens to them and can't wait to see what is next. It's a bit spicy/saucy, and a whole lot of fun to read. One of my markers of a good book was did it make me laugh - yep - out and out startled my husband with an unflattering barking laugh that for him came out of nowhere! Hoping the last two books in the series go to audio book soon. It has been a fabulous listen as I have a long commute. Thank you Beck Grey for such a fun story.
